Kathy L. Powers is Associate Chair of the Department of Africana Studies and Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of New Mexico, where she also holds an affiliated appointment in the UNM School of Law. She has been named an external faculty member at the Santa Fe Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as well as a Wilson Center Fellow and DEI Advisor at the Wilson Center for International Scholars in Washington, DC. Dr. Powers is a Research and Design Team member on the Being and Transforming Think Tank convened by Georgetown University and the Well-being Project. Dr. Powers is interested in complexity approaches applied to the design of institutions and law in international politics specifically focused on human rights, trade, and conflict. Her research focuses on global reparations systems and reparations efforts in the United State, the design and authority of international organizations, as well as the securitization of regional economic institutions. She has published her research in diverse venues such as the Journal of Conflict Resolution, the Journal of Peace Research, International Interactions, Foreign Policy Analysis, the Review of International Studies, the NAACP Special Edition, Diverse Issues in Higher Education, and Nautilus. The National Science Foundation, Wilson Center for International Scholars, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, University of Arizona, Penn State University, and University of New Mexico have supported her work.
